The instructor at First Stirrups Riding School in a black cowboy hat, holding a bay horse

About me

I’m Caroline Wackerhagen.

I’ve been riding horses since I was six years old, and I never found a reason to stop. For five straight years I showed at all-around western shows, and I loved every part of it — the early mornings, the grooming, the nerves before a class, and the ride itself.

All-around means a little bit of everything, and that’s what I liked about it. It’s also why I’m glad to teach a total beginner: there isn’t a part of horses I’d rather skip past.

These days I teach at Fox Briar Farm in Gray Court, SC, one rider at a time, at whatever pace feels right for you.

Why horses

I see God in horses, constantly.

I’m a Christian, and horses are one of the clearest places I meet Him. An animal that size choosing to be gentle with a nervous beginner. Trust that can’t be forced, only offered. A horse that reads your mood before you’ve said a word.

It happens in the quiet too — early light in the barn, a horse breathing slow next to you, nothing else going on. That’s where the teaching part of a lesson really starts.

“Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.”
Psalm 20:7

If any of that sounds like what you’re looking for, come sit on a horse.
